Overview

MMB's RapidSE firmware and associated tools enable the development of Zigbee Smart Energy (SE) compatible devices.

Firmware

We offer two streams of RapidSE firmware:

  • RapidSE Devices is intended to be used in devices that connect to a Smart Meter (aka ESI). Unless you are developing a Smart Meter, this is the firmware that you will be using in your product. It has been used in In-Home Displays, Load Controllers, Thermostats, Solar microinverters, and more. This firmware was developed against the SE 1.1b specifications.
  • RapidSE ESI can be used to form a Zigbee SE network and simulate the Smart Meter. Many of our customers (and numerous electric utilities) have reported that it's easier to use this firmware and our desktop software to test their SE devices than it is to use a development version of a Smart Meter.

Hardware

RapidSE Devices can be used on the following hardware:

  • USB Stick: Z357PA30-USB. USB Drivers and datasheet for this hardware are available here.
  • Development Board: Z357PA31-DEV. USB Drivers and datasheet for this hardware are available here.

RapidSE ESI can be used on the following hardware:

  • USB Stick: Z357PA22-USB (aka Legacy USB Stick, with black enclosure). USB Drivers and datasheet for this hardware are available in the table below.

RapidSE Desktop

The RapidSE Desktop software provides a simple UI to communicate with our hardware using the RapidSE Serial Protocol (again, separated into ESI and Devices flavours). Most of our customers use RapidSE Desktop to complete some quick demonstrations and begin learning about the usage of various serial frames.

The installation files for RapidSE Desktop Devices and RapidSE Desktop ESI are available in the table below. When you launch the software for the first time, it will prompt you to send some registration information to us and we will respond with your license files. Remember to install the USB Driver to enable communication between your PC/Mac and your MMB hardware.

Getting Started

We recommend the following steps to get started:
  1. Order both flavours of samples (RapidSE ESI and RapidSE ESI).
  2. Install both USB Drivers.
  3. Download, install, and register both flavours of RapidSE Desktop (RapidSE Desktop ESI v1.7.1 and RapidSE Desktop Devices v1.12.0)
  4. Follow the steps in the RapidSE Desktop Startup Guide as a reference to walk through some demonstrations.
  5. Download the RapidSE Devices serial protocol from the table below to learn how to use the serial frames that will be required in your device.
