When I try to get my SmartThings sensor (e.g. motion sensor, contact sensor, etc) to join my RapidConnect-based Coordinator, they continuously join and leave, never staying connected. Each time they join, they join with a different Node ID. Why?

When a SmartThings sensor joins a network, it executes a Match Descriptor Request to search for specific client clusters. If they are not found, the device will leave the network and initiate a new join cycle to find another network that might have the clusters it's looking for.

For example, a SmartThings Motion Sensor looks for the IAS Zone Client Cluster (0x0500) on the Coordinator; if it doesn't find it, it will leave and try to join another network. If you configure the Coordinator with the correct clusters, the SmartThings device should join and stay joined.

For more information, search the SmartThings documentation for integration guides and specs for your specific device. You can learn more about supporting IAS Zone with RapidConnect here.
